        <title>Die Schweiz in geheimer Mission</title>

        <title>Big Brother Awards.ch 2019</title>

        <title>Moral Courage: Julian Assange</title>
<description>With the arrest of _Julian Assange_ on the basis of a request for extradition from the American judiciary, the Wau Holland Foundation is now collecting donations for his legal defence in the &quot;[Moral Courage](/en/projects/moral-courage/)&quot; project in order to prevent his extradition to the USA.

Despite all [controversies](/en/news/2017/12/statement-on-wikileaks-in-project-area-freedom-of-information/) over the person of Julian Assange, it is incompatible for the Wau Holland Foundation with the ideals of hacker ethics and the Chaos Computer Club to deny him solidarity in this difficult and dangerous situation. The point here is to show that the criminalization of journalistic activities and the punishment of active advocacy for freedom of information are not tolerated by us.

The Wau Holland Foundation has supported WikiLeaks' journalistic activities since 2009 and will [continue to do so](/en/projects/enduring-freedom-of-information-wikileaks/). The majority of donations in the &quot;Freedom of Information&quot; project benefit selected publications and the technical operation of the WikiLeaks platform. Anyone wishing to donate to Julian Assange's legal defence should do so in the project area &quot;[Moral courage](/en/projects/moral-courage/)&quot;.

<title>15 years ago: The WHS is founded</title>
<description>The Wau Holland Foundation celebrates its **15th anniversary**: On 19 December 2003, the Regierungspräsiduum Kassel signed the deed of foundation after the foundation business had been established on 23 August 2003.

Five of Wau's friends (Ursel Reichhardt, Gerriet Hellwig, Bernd Fix, Winfried Motzkus and Mel Wahl) had already decided at his funeral in 2001 to set up a foundation in order to preserve and continue Wau Holland's free-thinking approaches.

Wau's father, _Günter Holland-Moritz_, agreed to make the necessary financial resources available as a founder. Unfortunately, Günter could no longer experience the founding of the foundation himself, as he died in 2002; the foundation was therefore established in the name of Günter Holland-Moritz by the board itself (represented by Ursel Reichhard).

<title>First version of Sequoia PGP released</title>
<description>The first usable release of [Sequoia](https://sequoia-pgp.org) - an OpenPGP library implemented in Rust - was presented by the developers in October 2018.

Sequoia is implemented by three former GNuPG developers (Neal H. Walfield, Justus Winter and Kai Michaelis) who have set themselves the goal of providing a new and better OpenPGP library that can be used by different projects.

The development of Sequoia is mainly supported by the [p≡p Foundation](https://pep.foundation) and additionally by the Wau Holland Foundation.

        <title>&quot;So, what about politics?&quot; - Web3 Summit 2018, Berlin</title>
<description>The [Web3 Summit](https://web3summit.com) took place from October 22nd to 24th and was organized by the [Web3 Foundation](https://web3.foundation). It brought developers and users of decentralized web and blockchain applications to Berlin with lectures, panel discussions and conversations.

Bernd Fix (Wau Holland Foundation) tried to convince the present hackers of the necessity of a political awareness for the consequences and possibilities of technical developments with a lecture on &quot;[Politics](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP0Dd4N_bAE)&quot;.

        <title>Ways into the Digital Society</title>
<description>The [Center for Contemporary Historical Research](https://zzf-potsdam.de), Potsdam, presented a book entitled &quot;_Wege in die digitale Gesellschaft, Computernutzung in der Bundesrepublik 1955-1990_&quot; (&quot;Ways into the Digital Society, Computer Use in the Federal Republic of Germany 1955-1990&quot;), which deals with the perceptions, modes of use and socio-economic consequences of computer use until the advent of the PC.

Of course, this also includes the hacker movement, as is already evident from the book cover: Wau in the telephone booth with the Datenklo and Tandy as the opposite pole to white coat informatics in industry, the military and bureaucracy. A ZZF doctoral student spent almost two years researching for this book in the Hacker Archive of the Wau Holland Foundation.

<description>From 22 to 23 September 2018 the hacker conference **Datenspuren** took place again in Dreden, Germany, in order to promote the exchange of ideas between politics, society and hackers with critical contributions as well as to encourage participation and shaping. The [keynote](https://ftp.c3d2.de/datenspuren/2018/9347-hd.mp4) was given by Bernd Fix (Wau Holland Foundation).

        <title>LibertyBits 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria</title>
<description>In Sofia, Bulgaria, the first [LibertyBits](https://libertybits.org) conference took place on April 24, 2018, focusing on the topics _Blockchain_, _Privacy_ and _Free Software_ - admittedly a somewhat unusual combination.

Since the conference was sponsored by our project partner [p≡p Foundation](https://pep.foundation), the Wau Holland Foundation gladly accepted the request to support the conference with a talk. Bernd Fix gave a lecture under the title &quot;_And All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace_&quot; on the topic &quot;[Cybernetic Society](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1T3PqZu2Q0&amp;t=0s&amp;index=19&amp;list=PL1KolIPd38m7H__lwgtjp5P4H2veLuIWx)&quot; from the project area &quot;Informational Self-Determination&quot;.

<title>Finally chaos at the Chaos Communication Congress</title>
<description>In the run-up to the 34th Chaos Communication Congress, there have been
various statements on a possible &quot;Code of Conduct&quot;. A negative statement by
the Wau Holland Foundation in the Wiki of the Congress against the introduction
of a &quot;Code of Conduct&quot; occupied the status of the Wau Holland Foundation by
activists.

From this stand occupation through the intervention of the &quot;Awareness Team&quot; then
a moderated dialogue between the different participants of the different
groups.

The representatives of the Wau-Holland Foundation and the stand-up activists
have found that they see the same or similar problems at CCC events. Concisely,
this concerns the protection of individual participants at events or meetings in
relation to acts that are perceived as excessive or discriminatory and the
strongly expandable diversity with regard to international participants.

The common dialogue was helpful for the mutual and thematic understanding. Both
sides want to continue the dialogue and open it up to our community in order to
make the events and meetings safe and enjoyable for all participants.

After the congress motto &quot;tuwat&quot;, the first steps were already taken on the
34c3 and more are planned together.

All the experiences that we have gathered over the last 34 years should be
incorporated into this process in order to develop a future-compatible
solution.
